Abstract
We conducted a retrospective study of 43 patients with congenital esotropia treated surgically from 1983 to 1987 in Kyung Hee Medical Center.
In comparison of results of operations performed before and after the patients were 24 months, we found no differences in binocular function; 3 of 10 patients (30%) operated upon before 24 months of age and 7 of 22 patients (32%) operated upon after 24 months of age achieved peripheral fusion.
Final motor alignment showed that 32 patients (75%) were within 10 prism diopters.
Despite adequate alignment, none of 32 patients achieved stereoacuity better than 60 seconds of arc on Titmus stereotest.
In conclusion, foveal fusion and normal stereoacuity are not attainable in congenital esotropia, regardless of the age at which surgery is performed, but peripheral fusion may be attained.
